CEDHA’s Mining Program

CEDHA’s work related to mining focuses on revealing unsustainable practices and gaps in public policy realted to the extractive sector. We are addressing a systemic and widespread lack of transparency and information about mining operations in Argentina and around the region. We’ve mapped mining projects including in areas where no public information exists about mining activity. We research and produce reports about mining impacts in the region, and have focused specifically on mining impacts to glaciers and water resources. We have filed complaints against companies of mining projects who are failing to meet basic due diligence standards or that are simply not complying with the law. This includes cases brought to local courts, or to non-judicial conflict resolution forums such as the CSR Counsellor (in Canada), the OECD National Contact Points, etc. We’ve also helped create MINLAC, which is a multi-actor initiatve coordinated by CEDHA to publish neutral information about mining and accountability in the region. CEDHA is also advancing work on addressing Oil and Gas (particularly Fracking in Argentina).
