As we move into the next UN Forum on Business and Human Rights, one of the questions many participants of the forum including human rights actors from business, the public sector and civil society are asking is:

Great, we have the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, but how do we get from the principles, theory and aspirations to concrete due diligence, policy, and effective remedies for potential victims?

The Center for Human Rights and Environment (CHRE/CEDHA) has recently published practical and prescriptive guidance to help implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, specifically for the Oil and Gas Sector in Hydraulic Fracturing (fracking) operations. These guidelines will also be applicable and provide useful insight to many other sectors!

This detailed publication reviews in layman’s terms, how to analyze corporate activity and due diligence regarding human rights considerations using the UN Guiding Principles. It helps public officials sort out their areas of competence and jurisdiction over human rights impacts by corporate actors, provides companies guidance on how to work the UN Guiding Principles into their operations, and provides victims and representatives of victims ideas on how to go about seeking remedy for corporate related human rights abuses.
