What is RIO+20?:
The next Earth Summit (Rio +20) officially referred to as The UN Conference on Sustainable Development, will take place from June 20-22 in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. This summit is a new attempt by the United Nations to advance with State and global commitments on global challenges of the XXI Century. The Summit takes place exactly 20 years after the historic Rio 1992 Earth Summit and 10 years following Johannesburg 2002.
The call from the United Nations is ambitious, inviting States, civil society and citizens to set the foundations for a prosperous, peaceful and sustainable world. The summit is grounded on three themes: 1. The strengthening of political agreements in favor of sustainable development. 2. Balancing the advancements and difficulties of implementation. 3. Responding to new challenges in society.
Two intimately linked questions constitute the central focus of the Summit: 1. An ecological economy geared towards sustainable development and the eradication of poverty. 2. The creation of an institutional framework for sustainable development.
