About FACE Intergenerational Justice

Mission

Fast Action on Climate to Ensure Intergenerational Justice (FACE Intergenerational Justice) is a youth-created and youth-led North-South initiative focusing on the intersection of climate and environmental justice as it relates to “fast action” climate mitigation strategies to preserve the planet for future generations. Our work encourages youth-led, inclusive, and intersectional discussions on climate change mitigation, resilience, and adaptation strategies pertinent to the most affected people and areas. A climate justice-based approach to climate change solutions demands fast-acting policies, investments, and other support for solutions that consider the immediate needs of historically marginalized communities and addresses the climate crisis before self-reinforcing feedbacks push the planet past irreversible tipping points. Within this fast-acting climate mitigation framework, reducing emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) plays a central role in achieving climate justice for these communities and quickly alleviating the immediate harms frontline communities face. We aim to synergize the demands made by youth climate justice advocates and the language of policymakers and scientists to ensure that the demands of these movements are not compromised but framed in a way that facilitates concrete policy prescriptions through the language of reducing emissions of short-lived climate pollutants. We are a collaboration with the Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development (IGSD) and the Center for Human Rights & Environment (CHRE) (In Spanish: Centro de Derechos Humanos y Ambiente (CEDHA)).

Vision

We work through our pillars of education, support, and outreach to amplify & strengthen the work of youth climate advocates to amplify and strengthen the work of youth climate activists advocating for urgent climate action. Our pillars are built on the foundation of climate and environmental justice, framed by the need to combine the fast mitigation sprint with the longer decarbonization marathon to best address intra- and intergenerational equity by acting now on climate to adapt to unavoidable changes and build climate resilience.

  • Education: Climate action starts with climate education. Through social media, toolkits, webinars, and other collaborations, we aim to make climate science & policy knowledge more accessible.
  • Support: Climate action must be consciously sustained. Through funding, connecting youth with our network of lawyers and scientists, and other work, we aim to embolden youth action.
  • Outreach: Climate action must involve community. Through monthly partner calls, collaboration, and other engagement, we aim to inspire & strengthen our community of youth climate activists.

Chair Biographies

Amelia Murphy (she/her) is a founding co-chair of FACE Intergenerational Justice, Deputy Director of the India Program at IGSD, and a Board Director at CHRE. She has been working to advance environmental and climate justice through fast mitigation solutions at the local, national, and international levels for over 6 years in various roles in the non-profit and public sectors. Amelia holds a B.A.S.c. in Sustainability, Science, and Society from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Languages: English (native); Spanish (intermediate)

Caitlan Frederick (she/her) is a founding co-chair of FACE Intergenerational Justice and a Research Associate at IGSD. Her research includes how to transform our current food system to be sustainable (in mitigating super climate pollutants such as methane, black carbon, and nitrous oxide), how to promote justice within food systems faced with climate shocks and/or food insecurity, and how to uplift youth innovation to elicit change. Her interests are grounded in her undergraduate work with Dr. Ramanathan, distinguished professor and climate scientist at the University of California San Diego, on life cycle emissions from food waste. She served as the undergraduate student representative for UCSD’s first Campus Climate Change Committee. She holds a B.S. in Marine Biology and Climate Change Studies from UCSD. Trina Chiemi (she/they) is a founding co-chair of FACE Intergenerational Justice and a Research Associate at IGSD. Their research is on intergenerational climate justice and climate litigation with a focus on near-term climate mitigation strategies, particularly on super pollutants. Trina holds a B.A. in Political Science and Peace, War, and Defense from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a joint minor with Duke University in Politics, Philosophy, & Economics. They are currently a J.D. candidate at Vermont Law & Graduate School, where they are a board member of the Environmental Law Society, a senator for the Student Bar Association, and a member of the Environmental Justice Law Society. They are also a volunteer contributor for Earth Uprising’s Law and Policy branch. Languages: English (fluent); Japanese (native); Spanish (beginner)
